Bitou Municipality has confirmed that its agreement with the Shark Spotters programme has been concluded, providing clarity on the continuation of the beach-safety service.

Bitou Municipality says an agreement with the Shark Spotters programme has been concluded following earlier indications that the service could potentially be withdrawn.
According to a statement issued by the Municipality, Shark Spotters continued operating and providing services to beach users despite the earlier uncertainty.
The Municipality acknowledged the programme’s role in promoting beach safety and said it remains committed to its continuation.
Programme Supported Through Grant-in-Aid Policy
The municipal statement also confirms that Council supports the Shark Spotters programme through Bitou Municipality’s Grant-in-Aid Policy.
According to the Municipality, its financial contribution remains subject to the relevant legislative requirements, including the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA).
The statement does not specify the value of the financial contribution, the duration of the newly concluded agreement or the operational details of the programme.
Those details would be useful to establish in future reporting.
Beach Safety Ahead of the Summer Season
The confirmation comes as Bitou moves towards its busier summer period, when beaches around Plettenberg Bay experience increased activity from residents and visitors.
The continuation of Shark Spotters therefore provides an important update for beach users as the summer season approaches.
BitouScape will continue following local beach-safety developments and publish verified updates as further information becomes available.
