In a positive step toward mobility and accessibility, Central Beach in Plettenberg Bay became the proud host of a transformative new feature.

At 9am on Sunday, 5 April 2025, Central Beach hosted the official launch of the Mobility Mat — a dedicated access pathway designed to assist individuals with mobility challenges in enjoying the beach with greater ease and dignity.

Spearheaded by Willow Mullins, General Manager of Moby’s restaurant, and Kiera Primo, owner of Dolphin Adventures, the initiative marks a significant milestone for the Plettenberg Bay community, placing it at the forefront of accessible tourism and public space development in the Garden Route.

“This mat is more than just a pathway — it represents freedom, dignity, and equal access for all,” said Willow Mullins during the heartfelt launch event. “Everyone deserves to enjoy the beauty of the ocean, and today we’re taking a step closer to making that possible.”

The Mobility Mat, now fully operational and available for public use, allows wheelchair users, people with walking aids, parents with strollers, and elderly citizens to navigate the sandy terrain with greater ease. It leads directly to the shoreline, offering an opportunity that many have previously found difficult or even impossible.

The mat is made of eco-conscious, non-slip material designed to withstand the elements while remaining gentle on the environment. Importantly, it is both removable and easily maintained, ensuring minimal impact to the natural surroundings while maximising community benefit.

This initiative also honours the passionate groundwork laid by Rita Van Rensburg & the late Mike Hardaker, who originally kicked off the Differently-Abled Awareness Campaign in Plettenberg Bay. The launch of the Mobility Mat is a dream come true for Rita and a testament to her tireless advocacy for equal access and representation.

A Broader Vision for Inclusive Coastal Spaces

Plettenberg Bay, a cherished holiday destination, is known for its pristine beaches and community spirit. With the introduction of the Mobility Mat, Central Beach is now a space where no one is left behind.

Residents, beachgoers, and advocacy groups for the differently-abled expressed enthusiastic support for the initiative. The event saw community members coming together — a true celebration of unity, innovation, and the right for all to connect with nature.

“This initiative sends a message to every visitor and local: our town values inclusion,” said one attendee. “It’s a small change with a huge impact.”

Thank You to Our Sponsors

This project could not have been made possible without the generous contributions and unwavering support from our incredible sponsors:

Plett Watch, Build It, Bay View, Moby’s, Dolphin Adventures, Cookiez, and numerous community members who donated, offered their time, resources, and heartfelt encouragement. Your commitment to accessibility for the differently-abled is deeply appreciated, and your partnership has helped create lasting impact.

Looking Ahead

Both Kiera and Willow are actively working on plans to expand the program, advocating for a mobility chair and additional support structures to further enhance access. They are also exploring partnerships with local businesses and tourism operators to ensure accessibility becomes a consistent feature in Plett’s hospitality offering.

The Mobility Mat is open for public use immediately, and residents are encouraged to spread the word, make use of the new facility, and participate in future accessibility-focused initiatives.
