The Bitou Birding Festival returns to Plettenberg Bay from 23 to 30 October 2026, bringing together birders, nature lovers, conservationists and people who simply want to understand more about the natural world around them.
Now in its third year, the week-long festival carries the theme “Slow Down. Look Up. Reconnect.” ~ an invitation to spend time outdoors, notice the birdlife around us and experience some of the remarkably different habitats found across the Bitou region.
From Forest Canopy to Open Ocean
One of the distinctive features of birding in Bitou is how quickly the landscape changes.
Forest, fynbos, wetlands, rivers, estuaries, coastline and ocean provide habitats for very different bird species, and the festival programme has been designed to explore that variety.
Activities scheduled for the 2026 festival include guided bird walks, river and estuary excursions, canoe and boat trips, a pelagic seabird expedition, conservation talks, practical workshops and family-friendly activities.
That means you don't need to arrive as an experienced birder. The programme caters for committed birders as well as people beginning to take an interest in the birds they see around Bitou every day.
Visit the Festival Hub at Kwendalo
Kwendalo will once again serve as the main Festival Hub for the week.
Visitors will be able to attend presentations by knowledgeable speakers, watch bird-ringing demonstrations and explore the outdoor exhibitor area.
Kwendalo also offers birding routes and hides around the estate, while The Kwendalo Café provides a place to stop between activities for light meals and conversation with fellow festival-goers.
Owls, Bird Quizzes and Conservation
The programme extends beyond conventional guided birding.
One of the highlighted events is A Parliament of Owls at the Raptor Rescue Centre, combining owl-inspired art, live music and food with a silent evening walk. The event also supports local bird-of-prey rescue and rehabilitation work.
Another social event brings bird enthusiasts together for a Bird Quiz evening alongside the Bitou River, combining bird knowledge with a more relaxed evening out.
We'll list significant individual festival activities separately on BitouScape where advance booking or specific event information warrants its own listing.
Birding With a Purpose
The festival also has a conservation role.
Previous editions have incorporated bird-ringing and biodiversity research alongside fundraising and community initiatives supporting conservation organisations working in the Garden Route.
For 2026, conservationists, researchers and local specialists will again share their knowledge with festival participants, with an emphasis on responsible birding and protecting South Africa's bird diversity.
Build Your Own Birding Week
Rather than following one fixed itinerary, festival-goers can select activities that interest them and create their own programme.
Whether that means a quiet morning looking for forest birds, exploring an estuary by water, learning about conservation science or heading offshore in search of seabirds, the festival offers several ways to experience Bitou through birding.
