ShowMe Plett had the privilege of meeting up with bestselling author Yusuf Daniels, and Cassiem Fakier from UCT Online High School.
These two inspirational men are touring the country, and have visited over 10 primary schools across the Western Cape. Their aim is to inform grade 7 learners about the opportunity of completing UCT Online High School – an innovative, quality education offering at an affordable price.
For the past month and a half, Daniels and Fakier have been visiting primary schools in various communities addressing the grade 7 classes.
They found that some schools were a little better off than others and no matter where they found themselves, their message was eagerly accepted, as all children, regardless of their diversity yearn for motivation, inspiration, and positive role models.
Yusuf Daniels kicks off the program with a talk about the positives and negatives of social media, cyberbullying, WhatsApp groups amongst kids, and gender-based violence. He establishes the importance of reading to comprehend better and to learn respect for themselves, others, and their teachers. It’s amazing to witness how intensely these children listen to their messages.

The saddest part of these meetings is that you can actually see the difference in the calibre of questions coming from the different areas and there is a huge difference.
“In my opinion, some of these children that come from the more challenged areas need to work three times harder than the children from the more affluent areas. Not to mention, they have more challenges surrounding them on a daily basis – very sad to witness, but unfortunately, it’s a reality.
“The great thing about UCT Online High School is that it places all these children on the same level. Every child, no matter where they come from, gets the same quality Teachers and Support Coaches.
“And no matter where they come from, they have an equal chance of getting into a good tertiary system, and with that comes the possibility of a great life. There are challenges up to that point, however, the opportunity is available for all.” Explains Yusuf Daniels, feeling quite emotional.
Cassiem Fakier guides the students through the whole UCT Online High School program. keeping it short so that the children don’t lose interest.
“The best part of the presentation is when Cassiem opens up the floor to questions and the children enthusiastically ask important questions that they have. There is so much interest at such a young age.
“UCT Online High School is an alternate option for these children, which was not available a few years ago. This extra option is what also gives parents peace of mind.
“I just read on social media that a friend of mine has applied to 9 high schools and not one has accepted his child. Looking over the comment section I noticed that there are over 100 comments from so many people who are in the same boat.
“UCT Online High School is a great option in these times we live in with all the safety issues, bullying, and just crazy challenges that our children have to endure nowadays. However, for me personally, the best thing about this program is when a twelve-year-old child reaches out to us after the session and says, ‘Sir, that was very inspirational, and thank you for coming to our school. I will definitely give my mom the pamphlet.’
“So thank you to UCT Online High School for taking the initiative and recognising that these children from different dynamics need inspiration, and also for providing a great option to them if they’re not keen on going to a physical high school.
