A routine roadside check turned into a significant law enforcement operation on Monday night, April 13, at the Tsitsikamma Toll Plaza just outside Plettenberg Bay.
Officers from the Knysna Provincial Traffic Centre were conducting inspections linked to ongoing foot-and-mouth disease control measures when they stopped a vehicle travelling along the N2 from Gqeberha toward Plettenberg Bay. During the inspection, officials discovered a large quantity of cannabis, prompting immediate action.
Approximately 15 bags of cannabis were seized from the vehicle. The driver, believed to be a foreign national, was arrested after failing to provide documentation for the consignment, which is suspected to have been intended for unlawful distribution. The estimated value of the seized cannabis is still being determined.
A second male passenger fled the scene during the stop, escaping into nearby forested areas while still in handcuffs. Authorities have launched a manhunt and continue to search for the suspect.
The arrested driver is expected to appear in court in the coming days.
Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku commended the officers for their vigilance, noting the broader impact of such operations.
“Beyond enforcing traffic laws, officers play a critical role in addressing serious criminal activity during roadblocks, patrols, and weighbridge operations,” Sileku said. “The illegal trade and distribution of controlled substances remain closely linked to violence and organised crime. Intercepting these consignments on our roads contributes to safer communities.”
He added that visible policing, intelligence-led operations, and cooperation with SAPS and prosecuting authorities continue to strengthen public safety efforts across the province.
Investigations into the case are ongoing.
